The “Outstanding Curriculum” (Ofsted 2007 and 2012) has continued to grow and evolve. It has been further enhanced over time (and again, since the Advent of the New National Curriculum) via such innovations as Creativity Weeks (Subject Based to start every half term with a bang!); Creativity Card Days; Class Swop and Pupil Choice Days; Trips, Visits and Visitors to enhance and bring every curriculum area to life, including two annual curricular linked residentials (Thurston Y5 / Edinburgh Y6) with all the weave and weft encapsulated within our Pastoral / SMSC Mission.
Key Stage 1 follow an established three year rolling programme of Themes with KS2 adopting a more varied, term by term Thematic Approach. This combination has proved to be very successful and enables staff expertise, initiative and enthusiasm, alongside that of the pupils, to create the best possible, engaging and exciting learning journey for every cohort of pupils.
It is important that parents / carers can see an overall template of both the statutory learning present in the new National Curriculum for every year group across the school, alongside the accompanying Thematic Template that covers many aspects of the year group programme but also provides enhanced plus wider learning opportunities. To facilitate this staff have devised a new common format to try to capture the flavour of our approach. These are reproduced below.
Please take a look at some sample plans, termly overviews (with which you will all be familiar) here and follow this link to take you to a published pamphlet outlining the New National Curriculum for a complete overview of what all schools are expected to teach.
