This year we have introduced a new approach to the teaching of writing. It’s called Talk for Writing and is based around a model text which we imitate, innovate and then independenly apply to our own writing. We begin with a hook to our text – you can see Year 3 in the first photo when they arrived to discover Flat Stanley lying on their classroom floor. Then we all draw a story map of the model text. Year 1 are studying Dear Zoo – you can see their class story map in the second photo, and Year 4 have had a go at drawing their own story maps – see photo three. There is a big focus on vocabulary and we ‘magpie’ effective words and phrases to use in our independent writing later on.
We changed parts of the model text to ‘innovate’ the story. When we’ve done this we’ll have a go at writing our own story. We look forward to sharing the results with you all. In the meantime, why not ask your child if they can tell you the story they are learning in class. Be prepared to join in with the actions!
